Ghost Marriage

Ghost marriage is the name of a Chinese tradition where the wedding is performed for one or both of the spouses is dead.

Previously engaged to be married

There have been a case in China where a couple were set to get married on February 4th, 2010 but on January 28th, 2010 the bride was stabbed to death by two heartless burglars. Although he's devastated and grief stricken by the loss of his bride-to-be, the groom still determined to proceed a sombre wedding at a funeral parlor for her.

On February 4th, 2010, at a funeral parlor in Zhangzhou, Fujian, the new bride lie in the crystal coffin in her wedding dress.  Family from both sides invited to act as witness to this unique wedding.

True Love Never Dies, It Only Gets Stronger With Time

So touching,  heartbreaking and true love is rare in this age. I can't help thinking it's like a tale in Romeo and Juliet but with a classic Snow White twist.

It makes me wish they could have a happy ending where reminds me so much of Snow White. Prince Charming's true love kiss awakens Snow White, the two get married where they lived happily ever after.

In a real world 'Snow White' does not awake from her crystal coffin, she would remain asleep forever.

I feel sorry for the poor groom and the family of the bride.

“Be strong and brave because God is with you."

I want to believe, my heart says yes but my mind says no

Ghost marriages are often set up by request of the spirit of the deceased. I’ve got two stories related on this you might find this hard to believe.
Story #1- A True Story From My Friend- Yeo Kim Hoe

A girl from my friend neighbourhood has passed away. A few months later she appeared to her mother in a dream saying she wished to marry a man who died recently. The girl gave her mom his name and address. The mother asked my friend if he knows the location of address her daughter had told her. My friend being inquisitive asked her why she wants to go to this address, she subsequently tell my friend the whole story.

Would you believe it? She found the address location and true to her words there was someone who died go by the name of...

During their “spirit wedding” at a flat house in Penang near Bayan Lepas the couple was represented in the form of two effigies made of paper, bamboo or cloth.

On either side of them stands their respective paper servants, and items needed by the dead in "daily life", such as the dressing table (complete with a mirror), a table and stool, trunks of paper clothes and cloth.

When the ghost marriage ceremony has been completed, all of the paper belongings are burned to be sent to the spirit world where it will be used by the couple in the afterlife.

Story #2 – From a recent story reported by local newspaper

A FEMALE ghost has been infatuated with a 63years old man since his younger years. She has been trying to make sure he remained bachelor by spoiling all his matchmaking sessions.

He should considered himself lucky as she did not harm him physically but only breaking up any chances of him pairing with another girl. It was wrong for her to interfere with his match making affair but she did it in the name of love.

Patience is a virtue even for a ghost as she could have takes it an easy way out by taking away his life.

Three years ago he died of a heart attack.

One day the man's sister said she dreamt her brother. In her dream her brother told her he wanted to marry the woman during the Hungry Ghost Festival last year.

Through the medium his sister was able to find out where the female ghost family was living. She already felt in love with him while she was still alive but did not reveal her feeling.

A lesson to be learned. If you love someone don’t hide your love, let it be known to the one you wish to spend the rest of your life with you.

It is better to have tried and failed than to regret for not trying.

So there it goes another happy ending story where she will live happily ever after in another world. She may not able to experience a life as a couple in earthly world but at least she redeem herself up as his spouse in a spiritual world.

Traditional marriage vows need to amend a bit to accommodate spiritual marriage which usually go something like 'blah blah.. Will you love her/him, comfort and keep her/him, and forsaking all other ... In sickness and in health, in poverty or in wealth, til death we won't part...'
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride,  2005 stop-motion animated  film about Victor, he is pledged to marry Victoria, a pre-arranged marriage by their parents. The two only meet the day before their scheduled nuptials, and Victor
conduct the wedding rehearsal  unknowingly in the presence of a deceased young woman,
she rises from the grave assuming he has married her!

Sometimes there are certain things are hard for us not to believe. It is when you have gone through certain experience than you will be a believer.

After All,  True Love Never Dies.

Sekinchan, My Old Hometown

Family Trip to Sekinchan, 19th August 2012

It’s bond time. No not James Bond but a family vacation where quality family time needed for cohesive family bonds.

Most people when talk about hometown, they refer to one only but for me I have 4 hometowns - Sekinchan,  Georgetown Penang, Ipoh and Seremban.
This holiday we did not have any plans to go anywhere in particular, so I suggested we go to Sekinchan.
I spent my early childhood in Sekinchan but I grew up in several different places.

A little bit of Sekinchan history..

In the early days 1920's, Sekinchan started as a small fishing village and the main one is Bagan. The early Teochew settlers were mainly fishermen.

In the year of 1953, the idea of New Villages was born and used for the purpose of cutting off resources and support to the Malayan Communist Party.

Sekinchan consists of four villages, that is Site A, (mostly Hokkien farmers), Site B (is the largest village, most of them are Cantonese and Hakka, beside involve in agriculture, the villagers in Site B also involve in business owning shops, coffee shop and grocery stores in the main street), site C  (smallest village that inhabited by rice farmer) and Bagan (is a fishing village in Sekinchan, 90% of the population is Teow Chew)

How Sekinchan got his name?

Before that it was called by the Teow Chew settlers as Ang Mo Kang (white people port) due to the place used to be the British Military base.

The arrival of Hokkien people named it as Chap Lak Gi or 16 Miles due to distance from Kuala Selangor is 16 miles.

With the forming of new villages the above name was not suitable to use. According to old folks tale, a teacher by the name of Lim Bee Teack tried to run away from the Imperial Japanese Army and hid here. He found the soil is very fertile and name it as Sekinchan, in Chinese means the 'village suitable for plantation' or 'place good for farming'. This place was once a wetland idle.

From 1973 onwards, residents began planting rice with the encouragement of the Government scheme of the Green Book . Since then, Sekinchan has been known as Fisheries and Rice Village.

At that time, all the rice is very difficult to grow commercially because it rely on human labour. The farmer standard of living failed to improve.
Nevertheless, earning has increased due to the perseverance and persistence of the Sekinchan Chinese farmers. Self effort to improve productivity has triumphed by the following method:

I) Bringing in Taiwan new technology and new breed of rice
II) Using modern machinery in farming to increase production rice yields
III) Good irrigation system supplies to equal amount of water to each paddy field.
IV)- Utilize the transplant machine can contribute to better yield
V)-  Apply fertilizer at right time and sufficient amount

Now this is interesting, Sekinchan is the highest rice production per acre in Malaysia. Three folds more than the national average but Kedah better known as Rice Bowl of Malaysia! I don't get it, its like a team from a national team cannot compete with a state team? Only the size matter, Kedah being the largest paddy growing in Malaysia.

Malaysia currently imports around 27% of its annual rice requirements from Thailand, Myanmar and India.

The rice in Sekinchan is harvest every June and December. Rice here is yield the highest per hectares and the rice bowl of Selangor. It produce 13mt per hectare compared with other states can only yields only 4-6mt.

We have plenty of land but still only produce about 75% of our needs. Perhaps other state should take the liberty to know why Sekinchan can able to produce that high yields. At present the paddy farming area in the country covers 650,000 hectares of land.

Even countries like Japan, Taiwan and Korea with scarce land can be self sufficient. What is our excuse for not doing better?
We salute the hardworking and dedicating Chinese farmers of Sekinchan, even without much help had proved the saying; “When the going gets tough, the tough get going!”

For the state of Selangor, selling paddy yields to other states would require a permit and approximately 70% of the yield must be sold locally. That's why you'll find thousands of people flocking to Sekinchan to buy high quality rice as they can't get from their local departmental store.

Today, some of the land in Site A has been switched to growing crop diversification involving maize, fruits (mango, guava, longan, melon milk) and vegetables. In this way the farmer can raise income, optimize their use of resources, increases their land productivity, and minimizes unpredictable risks on pest and diseases common in rice culture. Something to fall back on, if something happens in one area, revenue can still be made in another area.

Journey To Sekinchan

According to the Meteorological Department this year the Hari Raya festival forecast will be a hot and dry weather brought by the south west monsoon to hit the country until September.

The funny thing is every time they announced something like that the weather turned out differently. Just as I predicted the weather turned to rainy day as GOD has other plans.

This is the first day of a long holiday festival. Normally when it comes to a stretch of public holiday especially the Chinese New Year and Hari Raya, the city folks will go back to visit family and relatives or spend a holiday somewhere.

I expected the traffic will be flowing smoothly but there's so little I know. Even before reaching Kuala Selangor the road already congested.

The first thing I need to do when I reach Sekinchan is to do is to find a hotel to stay.

My Old Hometown I've Come Home
In my head I was thinking who would like to visit to a sleepy town like this. No need to pre-booked hotel rooms. Wrong again, 40 years ago we don't have to book. Now, there are more tourist here than Seremban! It will be even more popular after Ntv7 film the drama Seeds of Life shot at the locations in Sekinchan.

It is a small town with not so many choices for accommodation, the only hotel the most decent one in the area is Harbour View Hotel. My sister asked the receptionist any rooms available? She replied "I'm sorry, it's full".

So she asked the receptionist to recommend us another hotel. My brother-in-law called and gets the same answer.
Wait a minute, on our way to town we saw a signboard at the traffic light, saying a new resort and it’s open for business.

Wow! A new resort

Looks nice, unfortunately not completed

We tried our luck but they need to confirm as the rooms are not fully completed. The rooms are schedule to complete in phases and the contractor might have some ready today by 5.30pm.

This resort path will lead us to the Redang beach within walking distance. We made a short trip drive there and found many cars already at the beach side parking. The sunset here is especially beautiful and plenty of seashell to collect for souvenirs.
Yeah, this place is a nature photographer haven for scenic places for photo shoot- the fishing village, paddy fields, nice sunset shots and migrating birds.

An old family photo taken at Redang Beach when the beach looked much cleaner than today
We search for a place to fill our growling stomachs. Found one at Jiann Chyi Restaurant as recommended by Axian TV show but the place was packed.

Nah, forget it, we’re hungry and later we found another new brick building opposite of Jiann Chyi restaurant.
It was packed as usual but luckily we found a table for us. However we still need to wait for another 1.1/2 hours to get our food. After dinner at 5pm we tried to find our way to a rice mill.

On the way there I saw this strange looking tree that look like a pomello. No, my sis said this is an anti cancer fruit which she does not know what it was called.

It's looks like a mini pomelo, no it's a grapefruit

As we pass by, we find a long stretch of irrigation channel and followed it. We thought we'll see a scene like
'A little house of Prairie' with it's open skies, seemingly endless horizon and tall grasses but luck has deserted us as the rice have been harvested so what left with a barren paddy fields.

Post Harvest Rice Residual Burnt
After harvest, rice straw is left in the field. Rice farmers scattered rice straw over the field to decompose, adding nutrients back into the soil. This is an important part of soil health. Cover Crop is grown mainly to reduce soil erosion by covering barren land.

flood a portion of the fields
Generally, rice fields also serve as the habitat for birds. A portion of the field is flooded where they help decompose straw, reduce weed population, and provide natural fertilization.(bird droppings)

Along the way we saw many swiftlet rearing building. Some foreigners they might think why are there so many war bunkers look alike at the paddy fields?

War Bunker? Nah it's swiftlet bird house

At a junction we see many cars drive pass us and I suggested we follow the path and see where it leads us. Ah.. so this is the ultra modern rice plant. Not the one I saw when I was young.

So many visitors at the Rice mill plant

Rice Mill Machine

The cultivation of rice begins by planting water soaked seeds in a properly prepared bed

Something about Rice
Rice is a staple food of Malaysia, Asian and 79% of the world population. Worldwide there are more than 40,000 different varieties of rice but the four major categories of rice worldwide:

Indica, (long-grain-is firmer and less sticky than shorter grain with less starch so the it tend to break easily. When cooked, the rice is fluffy and does not stick together. It's usually grown in hot climates)

japonica, (medium- and short-grain, very starchy and cooks up soft and sticky. It’s used in things like sushi, It is majorly grown in Japan).

aromatic/jasmine, (medium to long-grained rice. Jasmine rice is originally from Thailand, sometimes known as Thai fragrant rice. It is known for its nut-like aroma and taste. When cooked, the grains have a light and fluffy texture).

and glutinous (also called sticky rice, sweet rice, and pearl rice, widely used in many Chinese cuisines and home brew red rice wine.)

Rice can be grown practically anywhere, even on steep hillsides. It is typically grown in paddies, shallow puddles, because the the rice plant is tolerant of water and the water in the paddies prevents weeds from overtaking the seedlings.

Interesting Facts:

Chinese have a typical way of saying How are you? They say "Have you eaten your rice?". You are expected to reply "Yes, I have eaten"
Another fact is the old folk tale, usually the parents will says to their children 'If you did not finish up every grain of rice, you're wife/husband will not be beautiful'. A clever scare tactic used!

Rice Growing Process

Planting- The cultivation of rice seedlings are raised in a seedbed with a saturated water supply.

Transplanting-  4- to 5-week - old seedlings are transplanted from nursery beds into the water, giving the young plants an important head start to survive over a very wide range of competing weeds.
The rice has to grow 4 to 5 months to mature, when it turns to golden yellow. The paddies are drained of water.

Harvesting - Grains are harvested after the rice plants have flowered. Rice in the old days is harvested by back-breaking labor with a sickle but now with rice harvesting machine.

Drying- Once harvested, the rice is usually dried in the fields with the help of sunshine or bundled for processing. Undried rough rice is transported to a drying facility to reduce the moisture content of the harvested grains The rice is now ready for milling.

Milling- In this process is to produce final product of polish white rice. It has three basic stages,

•the husking stage -  removing the husk from the paddy
•the whitening-polishing stage-the bran layers are removed through whitening and polishing machines to give rice a pearl white look
•the grading, blending, and packaging stage

Pallets of packaged rice await distribution in warehouse.

No Hotel Rooms Available

My brother-in-law called the receptionist and being inform they still cannot confirm room availability till 8.00pm.
We did not want to take the risk of waiting for an uncompleted room, so we save for the next trip in future.
My co-worker asked me why didn't I call him as he could help me to find a place in homestay.(Homestay as the term suggests means staying in someone's home. By definition a home is "place together with a family unit that occupies a house with all the comfort of home facilities, differs from staying in a hotel room experience")

Head to Hometown No 3- Ipoh

I suggest either we go back to Seremban or pay a visit to my aunt at Ipoh which is about the same distance. We finally came to a unanimous decision to go to Ipoh.
My brother-in-law want to use the costal trunk road to reach Ipoh and he should listen to me to use another route southeast and continue using N-S Highway I suggested. Although a bit further, what you get is a smooth and comfortable ride.
A bad decision as this coastal road is dark, narrow and full of roller coaster bumper ride.

I consider this a blessing in disguise as this is the first time we cross the Bernam River using the dual parallel bridge, each boasting a road with two lanes. The Bernam River forms part of the boundary between Perak and Selangor. My sister says most of the younger generation has no idea before this bridge was built the only way to cross is using a motorised boat pushing the tiny wooden barge or some sort of wooden ferry. There would be scary moments as when a boat speed pass, the wave tend to rock the ferry.

The good old days - Old school style of crossing  Sabak Bernam river

Before we reach Ipoh the rain began to pour , making me difficult to drive due to the wiper of my brother-in-law car has worn out blades.
Do remember most car does not have a longer lasting windshield sea as the sun bakes will harden the rubber parts. I suggest you'll need to change to Silicone Windscreen Wiper Blades for longer lasting.

Looking back on the trip

I can hardly recognize the place anymore. It’s once a small, sleepy, quiet fishing and paddy field town but now turn into a bustling busy town, swarming with tourist.
Many years ago the people here use bicycle mainly for transport but I don't see much now except by tourist using it for sightseeing.

Mom says, 'there have been a lot of changes in this town since she left'. What she remember is every year a flood will come along and flood for 3 days come and go. Sometimes the flood comes at night, the water level just quietly rose and the next morning mom will see all her pots and pans floating around somewhere. My old Sekinchan also reminds me of my childhood when I used to catch dragonflies and fireflies. I was not a naughty boy, just a bit mischievous.

Old photo - My dad holding me during a flood in Sekinchan

When this place was still undeveloped areas, snakes are often found and caught in my area. My neighbor used to catch the snakes, cook it and ate them too. Seriously! Snake meat is usually said to taste like chicken. You won't know the difference.
Snakes are found wherever rats and frogs/toads are prevalent. Naturally they are often found in rice fields. So just be careful while visiting rice field.

For the record, the man who invented USB pen-drive hails from Sekinchan. Quality rice and plenty of eating fresh caught fish( Omega 3 found in fish is good for the brain)  from here makes a person smart. No kidding!

Pollution is bound to happen. The rows of restaurant should not be so close to the coastline. I am not sure whether the disposal of rubbish is done properly. I am sure if there is no proper disposal of rubbish, the rubbish or leftover will be throws to the sea for conveniently.

Restaurant owners need to look at cleanliness as a major concern. We love good, fresh, cheap and tasty Sekinchan sea food is well know for but if the owners don't want to be bothered or emphasis on  hygiene and cleanliness then all of my good impression will go down.

Is the good business of tourism a good or bad thing for Sekinchan? I hope it would not sacrifice the
ecological environment or natural beauty of this place.

Unfortunately, I have not enough time to explore more into this part of town. Maybe in the future, I get my friend as a guide. (He has been a regular visitor to Sekinchan and he says he already plans to visit in December)

I’ll be back. Hasta la vista baby! (Means want to see you real soon)

My old primary class photo, I wonder where they are now?

My Way (Korean film) not a song by frank sinatra

I have just finished watching the Korean historical fiction War movie. My Way directed by Kang Je Gyu is drawn from a real-life incident with a touch of Combat action, brotherhood rivalry turn into good companion, Chariot of Fire and Saving Private Ryan rolled into one and running a Olympic marathon final moments.

I still love this show despite of everything.

I was planning to see just a short time of the movie but ending up watching till the show end as it was able to attract my attention.
The setting took place in 1928 in Japanese colony of Korea Gyeongseong,  today's Seoul.

This story began with an innocent childhood rivalry between a Korean boy named Kim Jun-Shik and a Japanese boy named Hasegawa Tatsuo who carried out their competition into adulthood.

The two faced off against each other in a All Japan Trials for the marathon.

Jun-shik managed to win the race, although Tatsuo is awarded the winner but  he was disqualified for alleged cheating.  When the unfair decision was announced to the public, a riot by Korean spectators ensues.

As a consequence of rioting against the Japanese officials and spectators, all those involved in this incident were drafted to join the Imperial Japanese Army.

Korean resistance against the Japanese occupation, delivered a mysterious package at a party. Tatsuo's grandfather (a high ranking military officer) was greeting party-goers when subsequently the bomb packed inside the parcel exploded killing Tatsuo's grandfather instantly.

After the assassination, Tastsuo became infuriated and  start to develop intense animosity towards the Korean people.

Rioters are forcibly drafted into the Japanese army, including Jun-shik

Tatsuo's father who believes human life is more important than war thus wanted Tatsuo to follow in his footsteps and become a doctor, but he chose the latter to take vengeance.

Fate has brought them together again, but will there be hatred continued? No doubt he will never forgive but Tatsuo who is the new Colonel in the battalion pretends he did not recognised him. The first ordered he gave is to ask the previous Colonel to commit hara-kiri suicide which by ripping open the abdomen with a dagger or knife for brought shame to the Emperor after forced to retreat.

What A Horrible Way to Die!

No Retreat No Surrender the motto ? This tactic also applied by Sir Alex Ferguson's  football philosophy to play and a never-say-die attitude that produced some astonishing comebacks.

Actually was it Tennô heika banzai!" ("May the Emperor live ten thousand years!") - Japanese soldier(s) slogan when carrying out a Banzai Charge in Campaign. Heck didn't this phrase first originated in ancient China as an expression used to wish long life to the Emperor of China?
The Emperor would be thus addressed with "Wú huáng wànsuì, wànsuì, wànwànsuì" (吾皇萬歲,萬歲,萬萬歲; literally "[May] my Emperor [live and reign for] ten thousand years, ten thousand years, ten thousand of ten thousand years")

The Koreans being tragically treated as pawns, Kim were ordered to participate in kamikaze attacks against the Soviet Union in the Battle of Nomonhan. He disobey a direct order to join a suicide squad organized by Tatsuo.

After refusing, Jun-shik is imprisoned but he escaped with a Chinese anti-Japanese resistance and three other friends to the River Khalkhin. Jun-shik  hesitate to continue escape plan when seeing the advancing mighty tanks and infantry on the horizon. He ran back to his base to warn the Japanese forces as he feared of what lies ahead for his Koreans comrades.

Kamikaze attack on gas-loaded trucks against Soviet BT-7 tanks in vain

Jun-shik succeed in warning the Japanese forces that a large-scale Soviet tank attack is approaching but Tatsuo refuses to refused to budge from his tough stand on never retreat.

He reluctance to called in action for troops to retreat like the western movies and cavalrymen when they hear a bugle call. What followed was both Tatsuo and Jun-shik are seen flying through the air, knocked out unconscious from the explosion.

In February 1940, Jun-shik and Tatsuo end up in Kungursk POW camp, north of Perm, in the Soviet Union, where both Koreans and Japanese are confined together.

Tatsuo is disgraced and almost lost his life by Jun-shik in a fight. When news comes that without officially declaring war, Germany started the armed conflict with the Soviet. Because of the manpower shortages faced by the Soviets in its fight against Nazis Germany, the Red army prompted to forcibly drafted the thousands of other prisoners into the Soviet Red Army.

Tatsuo and Jun-shik are incredible fortunate to find themselves still able to survive at the end of the battle and Jun-shik persuade Tatsuo to don German military apparel taken clothes from the bodies and get through the mountains.

They all fight in a a bloody battle against the German army where both sides forces suffered heavy casualties at Hedosk in December 1941.

Kim giving Tatsuo a piggy back ride, something unthinkable in the beginning of the movie. "He Ain't Heavy, He's my Brother", it strike my mind on how beautiful if he sings this or play the song in the background.

As they travel on foot,  it becomes apparent that Tatsuo has been badly injured. They come across a town where Jun-shik goes outside to seek medical assistance to treat Tatsuo after leaving him at an abandoned house .

During his quest, Jun-shik had stumbled upon a platoon of German soldiers who are unable to comprehend a single word of what he was saying, captured him. In the meantime, the dying Tatsuo is found by Nazi soldiers
searching the house he was placed in.
Three years have passed, Tatsuo has recovered from his injury and now is part of the German Army. He finds himself on the beaches of Normandy, France,  in the final weeks before D-Day Allied invasion. As the army fortified military post where troops are stationed, Tatsuo sees a familiar face running on the beach.

Guess who else is back? He catches up with him to be sure it's not an optical illusion and see that it is Jun-shik. They decide to run away from their camp Normandy and go back home in Korea to be with their families.
What started as feud between the two guys who getting on each other's nerves, end up
with both of them act as a team, working together in the same boat for survival.
As they attempted to leave, the Allied start of a major offensive against the Germans by invasion of Normandy D-Day landings. Jun-shik and Tatsuo are caught in the crossfire, locked into a machine gun nest by a German officer.
Just like running a  three-legged race, Tatsuo turns to provide support for Jun-shik injury. Two enemies that are finally united in their shared hardship. Jun-shik refuses to kill his enemy, then goes on to save him in combat many times over despite the obviousness of Tatsuo’s hesitancy to ever return the favor.

They run toward inland, but Jun-shik is wounded by a bomb fragments in his chest. With his dying breath, he tells Tatsuo to assume his identity as Empire of Japan launched an undeclared naval attacked on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii that propelled the United States into World War II. Japan became an enemy of the United States.
Life is full of happy and sad moments, Kim dies in the arms of Tatsuo, his once an enemy turns into saviour.

Before Kim died he  reveals to Tatsuo in so many words that “you gave me something to do” (when they were boys). He removed his military dog tags and gave it to Tatsuo, knowing he could have been captured and shot if the American knew he is a Japanese. "He is now Jun-shik."

In the end,Tatsuo is later seen running and winning the 1948 Olympic games representing Korean using Kim Jun Shik's name then a flashback appears of their first childhood encounter with his late comrade.

Jun-shik had hopes and dreams of the day he will win the Tokyo Olympics marathon, his wish was fulfilled on behalf by Tatsuo who was once his sworn enemy .

This one's for you... My brother in Arms! Tatsuo running under his name

This film is inspired by the true story, his fascinating true account.. His Way.

In June 1944, American paratroopers in Normandy thought they had captured a Japanese soldier in German uniform, but he turned out to be Korean.
The actual person name was Yang Kyoungjong and his story is too unbelievable that cause me to double confirm by googling.

This man got 9 lives like a kitty cat. He was  forced to fight as a soldier for three sides in WW2  and yet able to survive until old age.

Yang give new meaning to Universal Soldier
This is his incredible story.

In 1938 at the tender age of 18 he was conscripted by the Japanese into the army in Manchuria.

The Red Army wins against the Imperial Japan in the battle of Khalkhin-Gol, Yang was sent to a cold labour camp at Siberia.

Then war broke out between Soviet Russia and Germany. It started when Germany invaded Moscow in June 22, 1941.

Again he was presssed to become a  Soviet Soldier and fought in the Russian front. Later he was captured by the Germans and taken prisoner at the Battle of Kharkov in Ukraine.

Once more Yang was forcibly drafted into the German army into the Wehrmacht to go fight the invading Allies in Normandy.

When D-Day arrived on June 6, 1944, Yang (now 24 years old) was captured and served time in Britain at the POW camp.

He went to the United States. No, no more drafting in army. Yang now an ordinary US citizen.

He settled down there near the Northwestern Univ. in Illinois until he died on April 7, 1992. Sad to know, not even his two sons and a daughter never knew about his unbelievable life story. Is it too painful to tell?

But if he told them the way it happened, they’ll never believe him!

It’s not as easy as saying “My son do you know when I was in my youth, I played for Manchester United (England), followed by Real Madrid (Spain) and La Galaxy (USA). Guess who I’m talking about?

I think if he is able to write his autobiography it will be a best seller or if he sell his story to a movie maker, maybe this movie will then be named as My Story instead.

One think that surprise me is this technique of using POW prisoner turning to fight against their enemy was it a standard practice at that time? Will those force to fight for them turn against them? Nah they have the machine guns ready at the back, any retreat they will be killed. No retreat No surrender, to be able to live you have to move forward and win.

War is morally and ethically wrong. Terminating someone precious life is not acceptable.
Even after this war the sight will long be remembered and are kept within the hearts but many will had deep scars in emotions.

I remember the movie from Deer Hunter, a war veteran unable to forget the horrible consequence of War killed himself. Those who go to war, carry the traumatic after-effects. Now in civilian life are unable to cope with the horrible things they've ordered to carried out.

War is an ugly bloody business. Many terrible mistakes of war resulted from ‘friendly fire’ that causes civilian or army casualties.

To be killed by enemy fire was to die heroic but to be killed by the same fellow army was shameful!

It’s hard to take a person life and not as common as killing a lifestock for food. When a person goes to a army training they’ll be brainwash to be reminded that you’ll have to kill or be kill by the enemy and should any soldiers killed during action, this will likely be say..

your service and your sacrifice for your country will never be forgotten. ...

Your tragic loss is felt , RIP Boys you have made your country proud ...

No war can be fight in fair and gentlemen manner. It hard to accept that if our enemy attacks and kills our soldier, can you still treat them decently when they are captured, and can we accept the same gesture or treatment in return.

It’s always an eye for an eye or payback time, emotion of hatred and vengeance will be overtaking our mind. Nothing can be reminded to be fair to the prisoner on according to Article 4 of the Third Geneva Convention protect captured military personnel, guerilla fighters and civilians. Making it illegal to torture prisoners of war, they can only be required to give their name, date of birth, rank and service number.

We have seen in times of war, many heroic deed perform not by soldier but by ordinary people.

One of them is John Rabe, a German businessman who used his Nazi membership to create a protective International Safety Zone in Nanking, China, helping to save over 200,000 Chinese from the Nanking Massacre.

Everyone loves peace and no sane person wants war....not one single sane soul! People would rather live in peace and harmony.

Conflict can causes death, poverty, disease and world destruction.
Why can't we be friends!

Perhaps one day the world unite and the only war is against alien threat invasion(not illegal alien).

Like a man says in his song..

Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

You, you may say
I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one

Let there be peace and harmony to the world!

Durian Season

It’s durian season again! Every year between the months of June and September you’ll smell it at almost every open air food outlet you go.

Some people regard the durian as fragrant; others find the smell disgusting odour like the some of the Hong Kongers describe the smell as “Cat’s shit”. They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder , same applies also to the food. One person's paradise can be another one nightmare.

Same thing people said about Hong Kong stinky tofu. They love it , we hate it. Likewise we love our durians ,they hate it.

I  think it's good not everyone love durians. Otherwise , the price will be inflated and our durians will become expensive due to the high demand.

Culinary adventurer and Bizarre Foods host Andrew Zimmern can eat all the disgusting bizarre food you can think of like taking a shot of whiskey with a snake heart still beating heart but I just can’t believe it when the one thing he can't stomach is durian.

Widely known and in southeast Asia as the "king of fruits", the durian is distinctive for its large size, unique odour, and formidable thorn-covered husk.

The Durian according to legend...

In the early 15th Century, famed navigator Zheng He, of the Ming Dynasty, set out from China with a crew of sailors, on a mission to explore Southeast Asia.

After long months of expedition, the sailors mind becomes restless and longing to go home or homesick. The Admiral Zheng He need need something to keep them motivated.

That’s when he discovered the fruit and name it “liu lian” in Mandarin which means “reluctance to leave.”

The mangosteen season coincides with that of the durian. If the durian is the King of fruits then the mangosteen is known as the Queen of Fruits. How do they compliment each other?

The durian fruit represents heat and has the element of yang, while the mangosteen is “ cooling” with yin energy.

There are probably more than 5000 kinds of durian in the world ? In Malaysia among the most expensive durian in the market are XO, Raja Kunyit and Mao San Wong (mountain cat king) which can fetch as much as RM25 per kilo.

My friend , Yeo said once you try it you will not want to taste others. Not for me, I think I will stick to the more common one(2nd Grade) like Ang Heh (Red Prawn Durian) which is cheaper. The flesh is highly aromatic and very soft with a bitter-sweet taste.

To open the durian is easy if it is already crack open, otherwise you have to open it through the butt of durian with something hard to pry open. Normally we use a chopping knife, a short knife or a flat head screwdriver.Mom always like to say the harder it takes to open the durian the better it taste.

Just like when you chase a girl, the harder it takes the more you'll appreciate her.

Don't Get Me Wrong - I'm not saying girls should play hard to get one.

Sometimes we could not finish all the durians, so the leftover durian pulps have to put into airtight container in the fridge.

To get rid of the strong smell, try to put a slice of bread in it. The bread will absorb the smell, others like charcoal and baking soda works too.

The durian seller will open the fruits for you  .... Of course, if you're too lazy to open yourself ,so you can eat at the roadside. In this way you save the energy and save you the trouble to dispose of the durian husk.

I think I may have overbought
How can anyone resist?

After eating durian you will feel heaty and Mangosteen`s provide the cooling effect. Another way is Old Wives' Tale by method of counteract this heat is to pour water into the empty shell of the fruit after the pulp has been consumed and drink it.

Yeo does not believe in old wives mambo jumbo tales, after an overindulgence in durians eating at night (6 durians eaten), he had at a hard time to cope with heartburn. Couldn't even move his body comfortably while asleep and had to go on a diet the next day.

His wife asked him the next day if he's alright, he just replied no appetite to eat, that all.

I told you so!

This method of cooling has been in use for ages, who started it?

Another common local belief or taboo is when eating durian ,one should not eat together with mutton to avoid more heaty or crabs meat (avoid food poisoning from chemical reaction) or drinking alcoholic beverages /coffee or carbonated beverages which lead to bloating of the stomach. No Harm Done in Following, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

How to Get the Smell of durians off hands or mouth?  You can rinse your mouth in water that have been rinsed with durian shells or use the durian shell to scrub and wash your hand to get of the smell. Frankly I did not try any of those method cause I don't consider it as a smell, I call it more like emits a fragrance or perfume.

There is a common saying is that a durian has eyes and can see where it is falling because the fruit allegedly never falls during daylight hours when people may be hurt.

Well I don't think you need to go risk your life by testing this theory.Make sure to put on a safety helmet if you do walk into durian plantation. Especially when a strong wind blows.

One thing sure is bad about Durian.

It is so addictive that I over eat the durians that would lead me to feel heaty the next day. Never mind loh! It's durian season ,once a year season event.

Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs Play

Lately there is a trend of making movies based on the story of Snow White.

Just to name a few..

Grimm's Snow White,  Mirror Mirror,Snow White and the Huntsman,

Snow White: A Deadly Summer - I've been told it has next to nothing in common with of the original fairy tale except for the namesake, so we can leave this out.

I haven't seen any of those above but I like the 2007 Disney version - 'Enchanted', contemporary version of Snow White who is thrust into the present day by an evil Queen Narissa. Enchanted princess steps out of cartoon, into Manhattan is  highly recommended.
An amazing modern version of 'Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs'

This remind me of a school play version of Snow White, which my sister played the lead role.

If you find you cannot recall of this fairy tale collection which the truth author is unknown, let me help you brush up.

Like all  old school fairy tale style the typical opening sentence of a fairy-tale is
A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away…

Oops. Wrong start. Let's try that again.

Once upon a time, a long time ago there lived a good king and a loving queen whose ruled over a distant land.
They desired very much for a little princess and it take some time before their prayers were answer.
Their joy did not last long as sadly, the queen died after giving birth to Snow White.

After some years the king married a new queen.Unknown to him, the new queen is a powerful sorcerer who do not love anyone except herself.

You know what they say, beauty's only skin deep

Talk about someone who is having a problem with serious self-esteem issues.
The Queen was beautiful but is very proud and jealous of anyone more beautiful than herself.

Sticking to her motto - Never compromise. ...There is no room for second place

The baby princess was given the name Snow White. She had lips red as the rose, hair black as ebony and skin white as snow. After the king had died. The true personality of the queen was unveiled. The young princess was being mistreated . She make her do all the servant's chores.

"mirror mirror..blah"

Every day the Queen asked her Magic Mirror the same question, the mirror must be bored to death listen to it and replying the same answer.

She stepped before her mirror and said:

Mirror, mirror on the wall,
Who is the fairest of us all?"

It answered:
You, my queen, are fairest of all.

This goes on as the years go by ,the princess grew to be very beautiful. Finally one day, the mirror reply

"The Queen was fairest yesterday, You're history ,Snow-White is the fairest of them all , now, they say."

So the evil jealous queen flew into a rage ,gave orders to one of her Huntsmen to take Snow White into the woods and kill her.

The huntsman had spared her life, and that she had run the entire day through the forest before finally stumbling into dwarfs' house.Their house was small with strange looking furniture. Everything is smaller than the ordinary.

She was so tired and hungry. So after she eat whatever food she can find, she lay on the little bed and soon fall asleep.

There were seven dwarfs who mined for gold in the mountains.  As soon as they return they found their belonging being remove to somewhere. That's till they found her sleeping in their beds.
The dwarfs find intruder turns out to Snow White upstairs, asleep

They did not wake her up, but let her continue to sleep in the bed.  The next morning Snow White woke up, and she told them her story. They decided to let her stay after some discussion. In gratitude , Snow White promised to cook, cleaning and look after the house for them.

Seven Dwarfs - Happy, Sleepy, Sneezy, Grumpy, Dopey, Bashful and Doc

The envy Queen soon found out that she has been deceived by the huntsman who bring the heart of a wild boar instead of Snow White.

When she asked the Magic mirror the same question.

The mirror reply answered 'Snow White is still the fairest in the kingdom'.

The Queen plots out a plan to kill her as she was jealous of her beauty.

if you want something done right you've got to do it yourself!

She disguise her self as an old lady and set out to the dwarfs' home. Before leaving to work the dwarfs warn her not to accept gift from stranger- Okay, even little kids know this.
The Queen doing evil plots by turning into an old peddlar woman,
later prepares a deadly  poison apple

Malaysia version use banana

She must have a short memory as being tricked into accepting a apple from her stepmother. Using old trick , the witch tried to convinced Snow White it is safe to eat as she cut the apple into half, knowing which side she dipped is poison.

As soon as she bit the apple, she sank into unconsciousness.

When the dwarfs came home that evening they found Snow White lying on the ground. The apple making her fall into a deep sleep.

So Sleepy Zzzzzzzzz

The dwarfs found out it was the Queen that kill Snow White. They look for vengance and chase the wicked Queen to the top of the hill where the queen trying  to pry loose a boulder in attempts to crash the dwarfs below.
The pry was struck by lighting as she managed to tilt the rock. As she falls bottom ,soon follows the loose boulder.

Oh no, CRASH! KABOOM

RULE 1 : Don't touch material that is most conductive  when lightning strikes

The dwarfs did not know the princess is not dead, she has been put under a sleeping spell .The seven dwarfs hold a funeral for the princess. Not willing to buried her due to her beauty, the  dwarfs build a glass coffin for her.
The forest animals gathered nearby to mourn for Snow White.
Here Comes The Prince

As times goes by, the Prince Charming must have hear from the grapevine. He rides to where the coffin has been placed.

Ratings, General Audience-with no kissing ,anyway the role of Prince played by a girl

True Love's Kiss Can Break Any Curse
